Extra Large Dog Beds – XL to 5XL Sizes for Giant Breeds

Every bed on this page starts at XL and runs to 2XL, 3XL, 4XL and human size – 100 to 170 centimetres of sleeping length. That is the range a German Shepherd, a Great Dane or a Saint Bernard needs to lie flat on its side without a paw hanging off the edge. Dog under 30kg? The large dog beds stop at L and cost less.

Big dogs sleep big. On average, giant breeds sleep 16–18 hours a day. That’s most of their lives. A large dog bed that’s too small or too thin makes them restless. A supportive orthopedic dog bed or memory foam dog bed helps them sleep deeper, longer, and pain-free.

Why Giant Breeds Need Special Dog Beds

Big dogs carry weight. A Saint Bernard can weigh over 70 kg. A Great Dane easily tops 80 kg. That pressure hits their joints and hips. Without the right bed, they toss, turn, and ache.

• Orthopedic dog beds reduce hip strain and ease arthritis.

• Memory foam dog beds support elbows and spine.

• Waterproof dog beds handle drool, mud, and accidents.

• XL dog beds give room to sprawl.

Studies show that dogs on cushioned, orthopedic surfaces show 25% less restlessness and 30% fewer signs of stiffness in the morning.

When Extra Large Dog Beds Work Best

• Older dogs. Seniors with arthritis need memory foam.

• Outdoor dogs. Raised or waterproof beds resist dirt and damp.

• Heavy chewers. Indestructible dog beds protect against strong jaws.

• Indoor loungers. Bolster and sofa beds give comfort and style.

Fun fact: giant breeds resting on correctly sized XXL dog beds are twice as likely to sleep through the night compared to those on standard beds.

Best Breeds for Extra Large Dog Beds

Research shows that short-coated giants like Great Danes spend 20% more time resting on cushioned couches than on thin mats.

How to Choose the Right Extra Large Dog Bed

• Size. Always measure. Dogs need space to sprawl.

• Support. Pick orthopedic dog beds or memory foam dog beds. Relieves pressure, improves sleep.

• Material. Heavy-duty covers for chewers. Wicker or wooden frames for style.

Dogs in properly sized extra large dog beds show 35% calmer settling behaviour compared to those in smaller beds.

Why Giant Dogs Love Extra Large Beds

Big dogs need big comfort. A cramped bed makes them restless. A spacious XXL dog bed lets them stretch fully. Bolsters act like pillows. Orthopedic bases protect hips.

Behaviourists note that giant breeds with the right beds are 40% less likely to pace at night. They wake calmer, stretch easier, and nap happier.

FAQ – Extra Large Dog Beds UK

What is the best dog bed for a Labrador or German Shepherd?
For Labs and Shepherds, an XL dog bed with orthopedic foam is ideal. These breeds are prone to hip problems, and vets in the UK recommend cushioned beds to reduce pressure on joints.

Do Great Danes really need a 3XL or 4XL dog bed?
Yes. Great Danes grow fast and stretch long. A 3XL or 4XL dog bed gives them space to sprawl without hanging over the edge. Standard beds flatten too quickly under their weight.

Are waterproof dog beds worth it in the UK climate?
Definitely. With the UK’s damp weather, a waterproof dog bed protects against mud, wet coats, and drool. Easy to wipe clean, and most have washable covers too.

What’s the best bed for an older Rottweiler?
An orthopedic memory foam dog bed is best. Rottweilers often develop arthritis, and studies show senior dogs sleep 25% longer on cushioned surfaces compared to thin mats.

Can I fit an extra large dog bed in a crate or kennel?
Yes. Many brands make dog crate beds in XL–XXL sizes. Perfect for keeping your giant breed comfortable indoors or in outdoor kennels.

How long should an XXL dog bed last?
With durable, chew-resistant covers, a good XXL dog bed can last 3–5 years even with daily use. Washable, heavy-duty fabrics are key for big breeds like Mastiffs or Wolfhounds.
